The role of binocular visual training combined with carteolol in the treatment of symptoms and functional recovery in glaucoma patients
Abstract:Objective To investigate the effect of binocular visual training combined with carteolol on symptoms and functional recovery in patients with glaucoma. Methods A convenience sampling method was used to prospectively select 120 patients with glaucoma treated at the First Affiliated Hospital of Bengbu Medical University from May 2021 to May 2024. Patients were randomly divided into an observation group (60 cases) and a control group (60 cases) using a random number table. The control group received carteolol eye drops, while the observation group received binocular visual training in addition to carteolol eye drops. Both groups received treatment for 4 consecutive weeks. The efficacy of the two groups was compared; differences in visual perception indicators (dynamic stereopsis, rough stereopsis, and fine stereopsis) were analyzed; differences in intraocular pressure, visual acuity, and optic nerve function indicators [pattern visual evoked potential (P-VEP) amplitude and latency] were compared; and adverse reactions were recorded. Results After treatment, the total effective rate of the observation group was 93.33%, which was higher than that of the control group (76.67%), with a statistically significant difference (χ²=6.536, P<0.05). After treatment, the proportion of patients who recovered dynamic stereopsis, rough stereopsis, and fine stereopsis was higher in the observation group than in the control group, with statistically significant differences (χ²=8.711, 6.171, 6.009, P<0.05). After treatment, the visual acuity and P-VEP amplitude of the observation group were higher than those of the control group, while intraocular pressure and P-VEP latency were lower (t=2.732, 3.777, 8.572, 5.587, P<0.05). During treatment, there was no statistically significant difference in the incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups (χ²=0.370, P>0.05). Conclusion The combination of binocular visual training and carteolol eye drops shows significant therapeutic effects in patients with glaucoma, effectively improving visual perception levels, reducing intraocular pressure, and repairing optic nerve function, with good safety.
