Effect of n-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Supplementation on the Prognosis of Elderly Patients with Myocardial Infarction
Abstract:Objective To explore the effect of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (n-3 PUFAs) supplementation on the prognosis of elderly patients with myocardial infarction. Methods A total of 90 elderly patients with myocardial infarction treated at Mengcheng County Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital from February 2022 to August 2024 were selected. All patients were assessed for frailty using the Fried Frailty Phenotype Scale and were randomly divided into an observation group (n=45) and a control group (n=45) using an envelope method. Both groups received percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), while the observation group received n-3 PUFAs supplementation and the control group did not. The differences in cardiac function, lipid levels, and inflammatory markers before and after treatment, as well as the prognosis, were observed. Results There was no statistically significant difference in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVDd), and left ventricular end-systolic diameter (LVSd) between the two groups before and after treatment (P > 0.05). Three months after treatment, the total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels in the observation group were (3.20±0.74) mmol/L and (2.01±0.40) mmol/L, respectively, which were significantly lower than those in the control group (P < 0.05). Three months after treatment, the recurrence rate of myocardial infarction in the observation group was 4.44%, which was significantly lower than that in the control group (P < 0.05). However, there was no statistically significant difference in the incidence of cardiac death or arrhythmia between the two groups (P > 0.05). Conclusion n-3 PUFAs supplementation is beneficial for improving the prognosis of elderly patients with myocardial infarction and is worth clinical application.
