Abstract:Objective To evaluate the relationship between low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C)reduction therapy and major adverse cardiovascular events(MACE;myocardial infarction, stroke and vascular death)in elderly patients,to assess the effect of LDL-C reduction therapy in patients with stroke on life quality and to obtain clinical evidence of LDL-C reduction therapy in elderly patients. Methods A total of 723 patients over the age of 75 years old were selected for the study. The patients were divided into two groups, patients with stroke (n=179)or non-stroke patients (n=544),and were also subdivided into two groups:reached the LDL-C goal of 1.80 mmol/L (n=189) and unreached LDL-C goal (n=534). Their serum levels of LDL-C were measured, and their levels of alanine aminotransferase(ALT) were tested. Results The rate of occurred MACE was lower in patients who reached the LDL-C goal than the unreached patients (P < 0.001). In the group with stroke, neurological function (mRS)was better in the reached group compared with the unreached (P=0.002). Conclusion LDL-C reduction therapy in elderly patients is effective and can improve the life quality in patients with stroke.
