Abstract:Objective To evaluate the short-term curative effects and adverse reactions of tegrafur, gimeracil and oteraci potassium capsules(S-1) as a treatment for elderly patients with advanced gastric cancer. Methods A total of 87 patients over the age of 60 years old with advanced gastric cancer were enrolled in our clinical study from January 2012 to July 2016 and were randomly divided into the observation group (44 cases)and the control group(43 cases). While patients in the observation group were treated with S-1 capsule, patients in the control group were treated with a combination of 5-fluorouracil,calcium folinate and oxaliplatin. Then, the treatment effects and adverse reactions of the two patient groups were compared. Results In the observation group, the overall response rate was 59.0%,and the disease control rate was 91.3%. In the control group, the overall response rate was 37.2%,and the disease control rate was 76.7%. The differences in those two rates between the two groups were statistically significant. The incidence of adverse reactions in the observation group(the decrease rate of the WBC count was 45.4%,and the incidence rate of nausea and vomiting was 27.2%)was significantly lower than that in the control group(the decrease rate of WBC was 67.4%and the incidence rate of nausea and vomiting was 55.8%). Conclusion S-1 capsule is effective and tolerable as a treatment for elderly patients with advanced gastric cancer.
