Detection and analysis of body fat percentage and BMI method in physical examination population form Binhai new area

Abstract:Objective To investigate the body fat percentage and BMI at different ages in adult physical examination population from Tianjin binhai new area,and to analysis the detection accuracy in determination of overweight by body fat percentage or BMI. Methods We selected total 2,198 people,whose physical examination was healthy,inclouding youth group (20 to 39 years old,566 male and 400 female),middle-aged group (40 to 59 years old,645 male and 456 female),and elderly group (≥ 60 years old,77 male and 54 female) from tianjin binhai new area. Results The average of body fat percentage detection was more than the normal range in each age stage,and increased as the growth of age;The overweight detection ratio using the method of body fat percentage was significantly higher than BMI method,and the excessive percentage of body fat in middle-aged men reached to 84.9%,and 81.5%in elderly women. The missed detection ratio increased and might appeared misjudgment of muscle overweight with the growth of age. The overweight ratio using body fat percentage method in elderly men,which was normal with BMI method, reached to 77.3%,and 75.0% in elderly women;The overweight ratio using BMI method in young men,but normal with body fat percentage method,was 9.7%. Conclusion BMI method might result in the misjudgment due to the limitation of age and exercise in the determination of overweight. But body fat percentage method can reflect whether the fat is overweight ,and body fat percentage is useful to nutrition assessment and therapy and sport instruction.
