The effect of comprehensive pelvic floor rehabilitation and its influence on anxiety and depression disorders related to urinary incontinence in elderly women
Abstract:Objective To investigate the effect of comprehensive pelvic floor rehabilitation and its influence on anxiety and depression disorders related to urinary incontinence in elderly women. Methods Eighty elderly female patients suffering from light or moderate stress urinary incontinence randomly received either a combination of biofeedback, electrical stimulation and pelvic floor muscle training or pelvic floor muscle training alone. Such index as symptoms of urinary incontinence and change of anxiety and depression disorders were individually assessed. Results The cure rates of the test group receiving the comprehensive rehabilitation treatment were 90%(36/40) following therapy and 72.5%(29/40)at follow-up. These results were significantly better than those of the control group (P<0.05). The mean scores for symptoms of urinary incontinence in the test group after therapy and at follow-up were significantly lower than at baseline (P < 0.05). Scores on the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale and Geriatric Depression Scale in the test group after therapy and at follow-up were significantly lower than before; they were also lower than the control group's scores in the same period (P < 0.05). Conclusion Comprehensive pelvic floor rehabilitation effectively relieves the symptoms of urinary incontinence in elderly women and alleviates their mental disorders as well.
