Causa mortis of senile veteran officers in Fuzhou area in 2004-2014
Abstract:Objective To analyze the death causes of the senile veteran officers in Fuzhou area over the past 10 years and to provide the valuable reference for prophylaxis and fundamental health care for the elderly. Methods Data from 253 elderly individuals,who were senile veteran officers and died in Fuzhou area in 2004-2014,were retrospectively analyzed. Results The top four death causes were sequentially ordered as malignant tumors (54.6%),heart diseases (18.2%),respiratory diseases (13.0%) and cerebrovascular diseases (6.3%). Among the malignant tumors which were the leading causes of death,lung cancers,gastric cancers and hepatic carcinomas were the three major cancers. Coronary heart disease,hypertension,stroke sequelae,diabetes and chronic bronchitis were the pre-existent underlaying diseases most commonly seen in this cohort,in which 96.8% senile veterans were subjected to three kinds or more of these diseases simultaneously. Concurrent pulmonary infection was another important incentive for the veteran death. Ratios of the patients who died of cancers were increased in the subgroup of over 80 years old. Conclusion The major death causes consist of malignant tumors,cardiorespiratory diseases and cerebrovascular diseases in the senile veteran officers in Fuzhou area in the observed period. Emphysis should be focused on early cancer screening and comprehensive measures for the prevention and treatment of cardiorespiratory and cerebrovascular diseases.
