Association between ideal cardiovascular health behavior and factors and the atherogenic index of plasma
Abstract:Objective To evaluate the relationship between ideal cardiovascular health behavior and factors and the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) in middle-aged Chinese men. Methods A cross-sectional study was performed, and a total of 27,824 middle-aged Chinese men were enrolled. Based on the definition of ideal cardiovascular health proposed by the American Heart Association, the association between ideal cardiovascular health behaviors and factors and AIP was analyzed. Results The percentages of the ideal health behavior and factors were as follows:total cholesterol (TC),68.5%;fasting blood glucose(FBG), 66.9%;body mass index (BMI),50.2%;physical activity,45.6%;smoking,40.3%;blood pressure,22.5% and salt intake,15.6%. All the 7 indicators of ideal health are negatively related to AIP(P<0.05),and rank ordering by degree of correlation are BMI,TC,FBG, smoking, blood pressure, physical activity, and salt intake. The high-risk of developing atherosclerosis are 61.0%,38.4% and 21.3%in subjects with inadequate, average and optimum cardiovascular health status. The results of Logistic regression showed that, after age adjusted, while a 1-point increase in the cardiovascular health score resulted a 0.046 reduction in AIP and a 22.3% reduction in the high-risk of developing atherosclerosis (OR=0.777,95%CI:0.768–0.787). Conclusion The ideal cardiovascular health behavior and the factors are negatively correlated with AIP,and AIP can be used as a monitoring index of the risk of cardiovascular disease. The population which ideal cardiovascular health scores ≤ 6 or AIP ≥ 0.2186 may be the high-risk population of developing atherosclerosis.
