Effect of meteorological factors on the number of emergency patients with appendicitis
Abstract:Objective To investigate the effect of meteorological factors on the number of emergency patients with appendicitis in Beijing. Methods Medical data were collected from four general hospitals in Beijing from 2009 to 2011;meteorological and atmospheric pollutant data were also collected from public databases. According to the correlations between meteorological, pollution factors and patient numbers,a stepwise multiple regression equation was adopted to analyze the number of appendicitis emergency patients in terms of meteorological trends. Results During three years in these four hospitals, the daily average number of emergency appendicitis patients was 8,with a maximum in summer (July and August). The results demonstrate that the number of emergency patients with appendicitis is positively correlated with average temperature ,minimum temperature and maximum temperature and is negatively correlated with average pressure and concentrations of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide. Conclusion Air temperature is the main meteorological factor affecting the number of emergency visits of patients with appendicitis in Beijing.
