Investigation of cardiovascular disease risk factors and borderline risk factors in military officers
Abstract:Objective To investigate the prevalence of cardiovascular disease risk factors and borderline risk factors in military officers to provide data for effective interventions regarding these risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Methods A survey of cardiovascular disease risk factors and borderline risk factors was carried out using an epidemiology questionnaire regarding cardiovascular disease in 809 military officers. The prevalence of the studied cardiovascular disease risk factors and borderline risk factors in military officers was analyzed. Results Of the 809 military officers,43.0% ingested more than 6 g salt per day,58.59%liked eating meat, and 53.89% did not like to exercise. The prevalence of cardiovascular disease risk factors was 43.51% and that of borderline risk factors was 74.29%; only 17.06% of the military officers had no cardiovascular disease risk factors. The three most prevalent cardiovascular disease risk factors were smoking (29.42%),obesity (10.38%),and hypertension (10.01%). The three most prevalent borderline risk factors for cardiovascular disease were overweight (50.56%),borderline hyperlipidemia (40.67%),and borderline hypertension(34.73%). The prevalence of cardiovascular disease risk factors increased significantly with each additional 10 years of age (P<0.05,or P<0.01). However, the prevalence of borderline cardiovascular disease risk factors increased significantly with each 10 years of age only before 50 years ago (P < 0.05,or P < 0.01),at which time there was no significant difference in the prevalence (P>0.05). Conclusion The prevalence of cardiovascular disease risk factors is lower in the studied population than in the general population of Chinese adults;however, many military officers have borderline risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
