Abstract:Ocean acidification is a result of an increase in the dissolution rate of CO2 in the ocean. It is changing the carbonate system of the world's oceans and may have detrimental effects on marine organisms.Copepods are important secondary producers in marine ecosystem.Understanding how copepods may respond to ocean acidification is critical for risk assessments of ocean ecology.Copepods of Tigriopus japonicus Mori, 1938 were cultured in natural seawater (pH8.0, control) and seawater acidified with CO2 (pH7.3) to study the effect of ocean acidification on its development, reproduction and ATPase activity. The results showed that the nauplius developmental time and the two ATPase (Na+/K+-ATPase and Ca2+-ATPase) activities were significantly increased under acidification condition. The reproductive output of female was decreased significantly. The results indicated that the energy cost of T.japonicus increased under acidification stress. The energy might be diverted away from other energydemanding processes such as development and reproduction, which caused early development delay and female fertility decline.
