A Preliminary Study on Beak Pigmentation and Its Associating Affecters of Dosidicus gigas Inhabiting Peruvian Exclusive Economic Zone
Abstract:Beak,a feeding organ in cephalopod, contains important ecological information. In this study, the individuals of jumbo flying squid (Dosidicus gigas) were collected by Chinese jigging fleet between 2009 and 2014 from Peruvian exclusive economic zone (79°20′ 84°30′W and 10°00′-18°20′S).The beaks were taken from 361 individuals with their 12 morphometric parameters and basic fisheries biology including age, mantle length (ML),body weight (BW) and sexual maturity stage (SMS) measured.Meanwhile, the beak pigmentation stage (PS) was divided. The relationships between PS and age,ML,BW,SMS and morphometric parameters of beak were built using BP neural network. The results showed that the main factors affecting PS were age,BW,SMS,upper rostrum length and lower wing length, and their contribution rate was 7.44%,7.40%,9.14%,7.88% and 9.07%,respectively.The beak pigmentation stage increased with age, mantle length, body weight and morphometric indices of beaks, and the relationships between them were significantly positive. In addition, the beak pigmentation degree increased with the sexual maturity stage. These results will provide a basis for further studying on the fisheries biology of D.gigas by referring its beak.
