Abstract：Bacterial diseases hamper the further development of aquaculture industry.The misuse of an-tibiotics may cause antibiotic resistance,impair the effectiveness of antibiotic treatment and is harmfulfor the environment.Poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB),a novel disease control agent,is a synthetic ther-moplastic polyester and a polymer of short chain fatty acids β-hydroxybutyric acid,with the characteris-tics of biodegradability and biocompatibility.PHB serves as an intracellular energy and carbon reserveof bacteria.This paper reviewed the structure characteristics,synthesis and testing methods of PHB,introduced the status of researches on the function of PHB in aquacultural animal health and diseasecontrol,and prospected the research and application trend of PHB in aquaculture industry.
