SUGGESTIONS ON CIMPREHENSIVE HARNESS FOR THE NORTH BRANCH IN THE CHANGJIANG ESTUARY

Abstract：There are three types of plan for the harness of the North Branch: (a) Blockage (e. g. dam); (b)Opening, such as the project of South Tunne-North Bridge; (c) part opening, e. g. the combination of dam and gate. Comprehesively considering the saltwater and sediment entering the North Branch from the sea and returning to the sea through the South Branch, water conservancy, traffic,reclamation and ecosystem, the authors presume that the combination of dam and gate is the best of the three plans. Moreover, there are rich natural resources of land, aquatic resources, tidal energy in the North Branch, therefore, comprehensive harmess is needed, in order to obtain good social,economic and environmental benefit.
