Abstract:The total lipid content and fatty acid composition of 7 Chaetoceros strains were examined. The microalgae were grown under defined conditions and harvested at late exponential phase. The major fatty acids in most strains were 14:0 (3.0-24.9%), 16:0 (8.2-28.5%), 16:1n-7 (16.0-42.3%) and 20:5n-3 (4.2- 10.4%). The polyunsaturated fatty acids 16:2n-4, 16:3n-4, 16:4n-1 and 20:4n-6 also comprised a significant proportion of the total fatty acids in some strains. Significantly high concentrations of the polyunsaturated fatty acid 20:5n-3 (eicosapentaenoic acid) were present in each of the 7 Chaetoceros strains, and the highest level was detected in B13 (10.4%).
