Abstract:Objective To develop the estimation formulae for the total human body volume (BV) of adult male Chinese from anthropometric measurements based on three-dimensional (3D) scanning technique. Methods Four key measurements,i.e.,the stature, the weight, the upper chest circumference (UCC) and the BMI,were identified after factor analysis (FA) on the original 137 anthropometric measurements.Regression analysis of body volume based on key measurements was conducted in 160 adult male Chinese subjects. Results Total four models of human BV,i.e.,linear model, logarithmic model, power model and exponential model were established base on the four main indicators. Then additional 16 subjects were used for model validation. Finally, two metrics were introduced to evaluate the prediction ability of the proposed regression models,i.e.,V and RVerror.Verror denotes the mean value of absolute volume difference between actual BV and predicted BV of the additional 16 subjects for verification, and RV represented the mean value of the ratio between V and actual BV of the additional 16 subjects for verification. Conclusion The proposed method to predict the total BV from anthropometric measurements based on 3D scan technique is easy to calculate, reliable and the estimation accuracy is satisfactory. It' s of practical importance especially when the knowledge of other segment volumes is unknown or in the absence of a well-equipped laboratory,or when traditional BV estimation technique,e.g.,underwater weighing (UWW) and air-displacement plethysmography (ADP),is not available or feasible.
