Abstract:Objective Mechanical properties of organic fibers are associated with their applied environment. In cryogenic environment, the changes of the properties of organic fibers relative to room temperature were studied. Methods With the method of the cryogenic in-situ test, tensile properties of six typical high-performance organic fibers from room temperature to low temperature were studied. Results Cryogenic environment had obvious effects on the mechanical properties of the fibers. The breaking strengths of selected typical high-performance fibers tended to increase at first and then decrease with the temperature drop, and the breaking strengths at low temperature were larger than those at room temperature. The breaking elongations of the fibers decreased continually with the temperature decrease. Conclusion In cryogenic engineering applications, the changes of mechanical properties of fibers need to be considered seriously and the environmental adaptability of fibers requires to be discussed.
