Analysis of Skin Heat Transfer and Prediction of Skin Burn Subjected to a Hot Water Film
Abstract:Objective To model skin burn process subjected to a hot water film, to analyze the rule of heat transfer process in the skin and to evaluate the beneficial effects of blowing and/or wiping when the incident occurs. Method A one-dimensional multi-layer model was developed basing on Pennes′ bioheat transfer equation to characterize the skin burn process resulted from a hot water film. Result Transient temperature distributions were numerically calculated using an implicit finite difference method to solve the Pennes′ bioheat transfer equation. A damage function describing the extent of burn injury was then calculated using the Arrhenius assumptions. Conclusion The model can be used to predict the effects of water film thickness and initial water film temperature on the damage function distributions and to analyze the beneficial effects of blowing and wiping on the burn injury. The numerical results showed that wiping is usually more effective.
