Abstract:Objective To explore whether the expression of Nε-carboxymethy lysine(CML)and leukocyte-associated inflammatory markers, such as neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio(NLR),monocyte to lymphocyte ratio(MLR),and platelet to lymphocyte ratio(PLR),were associated with atherosclerotic occlusion of human femoral and popliteal artery. Methods Serum CML expression in 68 patients with atherosclerotic occlusion of the femoral and popliteal artery as the plaque group and in 36 normal healthy volunteers as the control group were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA).The values of NLR,MLR,and PLR were also calculated for all subjects. Results The expression of serum CML was(12.88±2.49)mg·L-1 in the control group and(96.45±11.36)mg·L-1 in the plaque group.Compared with the control group, the proportion of males and smoking history and age,NLR,MLR,and PLR were notably higher in the plaque group(P<0.05).The receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curve analysis displayed the area under the curve(AUC)of NLR,MLR,PLR,CML,and the four combined for predicting femoral and popliteal atherosclerotic occlusion of 0.820,0.770,0.787,0.873,and 0.890,respectively(P<0.05).It was found that independent risk factors for this disease were NLR>1.81,MLR>0.22,PLR>136.54,CML>76.60,male,smoking,and old age(P<0.05).Conclusion Significantly higher expression level of CML were found in the plaque group, implying that CML could be involved to the development of atherosclerosis in femoral and popliteal artery. Moreover, the inflammatory response could contribute to the disease progression.CML is an independent risk factor for femoral and popliteal atherosclerotic occlusion, and the combination of NLR,MLR,and PLR with CML test could improve the sensitivity and accuracy of early clinical diagnosis of femoral and popliteal atherosclerotic occlusion.
