Effect of Maxilla Reverse Headgear Combined with Palatal Spur in the Treatment of Skeletal Class Ⅲ Malocclusion with Abnormal Swallowing Habits

Abstract：Objective To investigate the effect of maxilla reverse headgear combined with palatal spur on the treatment of skeletal class Ⅲ malocclusion with abnormal swallowing habits on the maxillofacial region and its therapeutic effect.Methods From January 2019 to December 2022,40 patients with skeletal class Ⅲ malocclusion with abnormal swallowing habits treated in the Department of Stomatology,Xuchang Central Hospital Affiliated to Henan University of Science and Technology.They were randomly divided into two groups:group A and group B,with 20 cases each.Group A applied maxilla reverse headgear combined with palatal spur,while group B applied maxilla reverse headgear.Cephalometric radiographs were taken before and after treatment.The treatment time,cephalometric measurements before and after treatment,the coverage of anterior teeth after treatment,and the correction of abnormal swallowing habits between the two groups were compared.Results The treatment time of group A was shorter than that of group B(P＜0.05),and there were statistical differences in SNA angle,ANB angle,NA-PA angle,Wits value,OB,and OJ before and after treatment in both groups(P＜0.05).However,there was no statistical difference in SNB angle,U1-SN angle,U1-NA angle,and U1-NA distance between the two groups before and after treatment(P＞0.05).After treatment,OB and OJ in group A were greater than those in group B,and the abnormal swallowing habits in group A were also corrected compared to group B.Conclusion In the treatment of skeletal class Ⅲ malocclusion with abnormal swallowing habits,the combination of maxilla reverse headgear and palatal spur is beneficial to the development of the maxilla and the correction of abnormal swallowing habits,as well as for the establishment of normal and stable occlusion of the anterior teeth and shortening of treatment time,compared to the simple use of maxillary anterior traction appliance.
