Mediating Effects of Perceived Social Support and Caregiver Burden Between Personality Traits and Sense of Coherence in Spouses of Breast Cancer Patients

Abstract：Objective To investigate the current status of sense of coherence(SOC)in spouses of breast cancer patients and its influencing factors,and to explore the mediating effects of perceived social support and caregiver burden on the relationship between personality traits and SOC.Methods The study employed a convenience sampling method to collect data from 233 spouses of hospitalized breast cancer patients at a grade A tertiary hospital from January and June 2023.The data were gathered using the following instruments,a general information questionnaire,the Chinese big five personality inventory brief version,the perceived social support scale,the caregiver reaction assessment scale and the SOC scale.Statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS 23.0 and AMOS 23.0 software,including descriptive analysis,t-tests,analysis of variance,Pearson correlation analysis,multiple linear regression analysis and structural equation modeling analysis.Results The overall SOC of spouses of breast cancer patients was at a low level,with the understanding dimension scoring the lowest.Multiple linear regression results indicated that neuroticism,conscientiousness,extraversion,perceived social support and caregiver burden were influencing factors for the SOC of spouses,jointly explaining 58.00％of the variance.Structural equation modeling results showed that conscientiousness,neuroticism and extraversion directly affected the SOC of spouses.Perceived social support played a singular mediating role between conscientiousness/neuroticism/extraversion and SOC,and caregiver burden had a singular mediating effect between neuroticism and SOC.Additionally,perceived social support and caregiver burden played a chained mediating role between conscientiousness/neuroticism/extraversion and SOC.Conclusion The SOC of spouses of breast cancer patients is generally at a low level.The level of SOC is jointly influenced by neuroticism,conscientiousness,extraversion,perceived social support and caregiver burden.Perceived social support and caregiver burden play multiple mediating roles between personality traits and SOC.
