Abstract:Objective To investigate the impact of multimodal ultrasound-guided microwave ablation(MWA)on parathyroid function, ultrasound measurements, and aesthetics in patients with benign thyroid nodules(BTN).Methods One hundred and thirty-five patients with BTN were admitted to Henan Province People's Hospital from May 2019 to June 2020 and randomly divided into two groups. The ultrasound-guided group(68 cases)underwent multimodal ultrasound-guided MWA,while the traditional surgery group(67 cases)received traditional surgical resection. The surgery-related indexes, nodule absorption, thyroid and parathyroid functions[thyroid stimulating hormone(TSH),parathyroid hormone(PTH)],aesthetic results(incision length and neck scar length),and postoperative complication rates were compared between the two groups. Results The ultrasound-guided group had less intraoperative bleeding, shorter operation and postoperative hospitalization times, and shorter incision and neck scar lengths compared to the traditional surgery group(P<0.05).There was no difference in the cure rate of nodules between the traditional surgery group and the ultrasound-guided group(P>0.05).The ultrasound-guided group had higher postoperative serum TSH and PTH levels at 1 and 3 months compared to the traditional surgery group(P<0.05).The incidence of postoperative complications was lower in the ultrasound-guided group than that in the traditional surgery group(P<0.05).Conclusion Patients with BTN treated with MWA under multimodal ultrasound guidance experience complete nodule clearance with minimal impact on parathyroid function. The incisions are aesthetically pleasing, the incidence of postoperative complications is low,and the safety is high.
