Clinical Characteristics Analysis of 275 Adult Patients with Esophageal Foreign Bodies

Abstract:Objective To explore the clinical characteristics of adult patients with esophageal foreign bodies in order to improve the diagnosis and treatment of this disease.Methods The clinical data of 275 adult patients with esophageal foreign bodies who were diagnosed and treated in the Department of Gastroenterology of Henan Provincial People's Hospital from January 2017 to August 2023 were retrospectively analyzed.Results Among the 275 patients,133 cases(48.36%)were males and 142 cases(51.64%)were females.The age range was 18-97 years,with an average age of(59.55±18.30)years.The duration of foreign body impaction ranged from1h to 40 d,with a median duration of 20 h.There was a statistically difference in the duration of impaction between age groups(P<0.05).Among 275 patients with esophageal foreign bodies,210 patients had no underlying esophageal diseases,and 65 patients had esophageal stenosis caused by various reasons.Among the 210 patients,foreign bodies were located in the upper esophagus in 163 cases(77.62%),the middle esophagus in 41 cases(19.52%),and the lower esophagus in 6 cases(2.86%).Among the 210 cases of esophageal foreign bodies,113 cases were animal foreign bodies(53.81%),74 cases were plant foreign bodies(35.24%),9 cases were denture foreign bodies(4.29%),7 cases were metal foreign bodies(3.33%),4 cases were plastic foreign bodies(1.90%),and 3 cases were drugs(1.43%).In the 65 patients with strictures,esophageal foreign bodies were large food bolus,vegetable pieces,meat pieces and tablets,and there was 1 case of iatrogenic foreign body(capsule endoscopy).Of the 275 patients,20 patients presented with esophageal perforation,and the rest showed various degrees of congestion,erosion or ulceration under endoscopy.Conclusion Esophageal foreign body is a clinical emergency and prevention is very important.Early treatment of esophageal foreign body can help avoid serious complications.Individualized treatment strategies are needed for patients with esophageal foreign bodies in different conditions.
