Abstract:Objective To explore the dermoscopic image features of molluscum contagiosum(MC)in children. Methods Retrospective analysis of dermoscopic image features of 140 lesions from 62 cases of MC diagnosed at the Dermatology Outpatient Clinic of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University from May 2022 to May 2023.Results Of the 140 lesions,22(15.71%)had umbilication and holes,13(9.28%)had vessels on clinical examination.Under dermoscopy,31(22.14%)had umbilication and holes,138(98.57%)had yellow-white structureless areas and 127(90.71%)had vessels. The 138 structureless areas were classified by frequency of occurrence from high to low as round(86,62.32%),multilobular(24,17.39%),cloverleaf(14,10.14%),nonspecific(10,7.24%),and trefoil(4,2.89%).There was no statistically significant differences in the frequencies of different types of structureless areas between the simple MC group, the MC group with inflammation or peeling, and the MC group with eczema(P>0.05).The 127 vascular structures can be divided into:single vascular mode 96 cases(75.59%)[in descending order of frequency of shapes, they are radial(53 cases,55.21%),crown-shaped(31 cases,32.29%),and dot-shaped(12 cases,12.50%)],and 31 cases(24.41%)of mixed vascular mode(including two or more vascular modes). The proportion of punctate blood vessels is increased in the MC group with inflammation or exfoliation and in the MC group with eczema compared to the simple MC group(P<0.05).Conclusion MC in children exhibits characteristic features under dermoscopy, including yellow-white structureless areas, vascular structures, and pores.Dermoscopy can serve as an effective non-invasive diagnostic method.
