Abstract:Objective To provide a valuable reference for accurate diagnosis of temporomandibular disorders(TMD)by analyzing MRI signs related to reducible and irreducible anterior disc displacement of the temporomandibular joint. Methods Patients clinically diagnosed with TMD and undergoing MRI of the temporomandibular joint at Xinyang Central Hospital from January 2022 to April 2024 were randomly selected.Cases with MRI manifestations of anterior disc displacement of the temporomandibular joint were studied, resulting in a total of 152 sides(32 male and 120 female),aged 10-72 years. They were divided into the reducible anterior disc displacement with reduction group(DDWR)(69 sides)and the disc displacement without reduction group(DDWoR)(83 sides).Observations were made on the side of disc displacement(left or right),the morphology of the temporomandibular joint condyle(oval, flat, and beak-shaped)and the presence of hyperplasia, the type of disc(biconcave, posterior band thickened, anterior band thickened, stretched, folded, and nodular),the presence of lateral displacement(medial or lateral),joint mobility(normal, limited,or excessive),and the presence of joint effusion. Results When comparing the DDWR and DDWoR groups, there were statistically significant differences in the hyperplasia of the mandibular condyle, lateral displacement of the disc, disc morphology, and temporomandibular joint mobility(P<0.05).There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in terms of gender, age, side of displacement, mandibular condyle morphology, and the presence of joint effusion(P>0.05).Conclusion MRI findings of hyperplasia of the mandibular condyle, lateral displacement of the disc, disc morphology, and TMJ mobility showed significant differences between the DDWR and DDWoR groups in patients with TMD.
