Clinical Features of Patients with Meige Syndrome

Abstract：Objective To analyze the clinical features of Meige syndrome(MS).Methods Patients diagnosed with MS were evaluated using questionnaire.The questionnaire reviewed demographic factors,stressful events,history of oral surgery,history of facial surgery or trauma,insomnia,history of mental illness,family history,changes in symptoms(morning,lying flat,throughout the day),aggravating and relieving factors,sensory trick(ST),symptoms,diagnosis time(time from the illness to the diagnosis of MS or blepharospasm),number of visits,confirmed department,medical departments and diagnosis conditions.Results Of the 100 patients enrolled,70(70％)were female,with a age of(57.4±8.0)years.Forty percent of patients reported stressful events immediately prior to symptom development.Thirty-seven percent of patients reported a history of oral surgery and 13％reported a history of facial surgery or trauma.Fifty-eight patients(58％)were diagnosed with insomnia,12 patients(12％)were diagnosed with depression,and nine patients(9％)were diagnosed with anxiety disorders.Twelve percent of patients reported a family history of neurological or psychiatric illness.Morning symptoms decreased in 71％of patients,lying symptoms decreased in 73％of patients,symptoms were reduced in 3％of patients throughout the day.Sixty-two percent of patients reported aggravating factors,forty-three percent of patients reported relieving factors.Sensory trick was present in 64％of the patients.Ninety-nine percent of patients reported symptoms of difficulty in opening their eyes,74％of patients reported symptoms of photophobia.The average time of diagnosis of patients was 12.0(7.0,25.5)months,and the number of visits was 4(2,6)times.Ophthalmology and neurology were the departments with the most frequent visits,and neurosurgery and neurology were the departments with the highest diagnostic accuracy,which were most easily misdiagnosed as dry eye.Conclusion This study is the first to summarize the visits of Chinese patients with MS,which may help to improve clinicians'awareness of MS and improve the level of diagnosis and treatment.
