Mediating Effect of Coping Style on Stigma and Psychosocial Adjustmentin in Young Patients with Thyroid Cancer After Surgery

Abstract：Objective To explore the mediating effect of coping style between stigma and psychosocial adjustment in young patients with thyroid cancer after surgery.Methods From January to October 2022,a total of 351 young patients with thyroid cancer after surgery were investigated by general data questionnaire,psychosocial adjustment scale,social impact scale and medical coping style questionnaire in the Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Zhengzhou University.The structural equation model was used to explore the mediating effect of coping styles on stigma and psychosocial adjustment.Results In 351 young patients with thyroid cancer after surgery,the scores of stima,the confrontation coping,the avoidance coping,the yielding coping,and psychosocial adjustment were 36.26±6.99,21.64±4.41,16.36±2.95,10.86±1.74 and 47.63±16.26,respectively.The total score of stigma was positively correlated with the total score of psychosocial adaptation and avoidance coping(P＜0.01),and negatively correlated with the score of confrontation coping(P＜0.01).The confrontation coping score was negatively correlated with the total score of psychosocial adjustment(P＜0.01),and the avoidance coping score was positively correlated with the total score of psychosocial adjustment(P＜0.01).The mediating effects of confrontation coping and avoidance coping between stigma and psychosocial adjustment were 0.248 and 0.098,respectively,accounting for 52.03％of the total effect.Conclusion Coping styles of young patients with thyroid cancer after surgery are mediating variables between stigma and psychosocial adaptation,and healthcare professionals can improve the level of psychosocial adaptation by reducing patients'stigma and guiding them to adopt positive coping styles.
