A comparison of the intensity of pain, the treatment impacts on oral health-related quality of life between patients with invisible appliances and Damon Q brackets during initial alignment

Abstract:Objective To compare the the intensity of pain, the treatment impacts on oral health-related quality of life between patients with invisible appliances and Damon Q brackets during initial alignment.Methods Forty patients were divided into two groups.One group used invisible appliances(invisible appliance group), while another group used Damon Q bracket(Damon Q bracket group).Both groups were surveyed with questionnaire after 24 hours, 3 days, 5 days,7 days.The intensities of pain were recorded for both groups during the observation period.After insertion of Damon Q bracket or the first aligner of invisible appliance at one week, both groups were asked to complete the oral health impact profile(OHIP-14).Results were analyzed using software SPSS 18.0.Results The overall OHIP-14 scores of Damon Q brackets were higher than those in invisible appliance group(P<0.05).The intensity of pain of invisible appliance group were lower than the Damon Q bracket(P<0.05).The intensity of pain of two groups reached a paek within the first 24 hours to 3 days, then reduced with time.Conclusion Invisible appliance could have less negative influence on oral health-related quality of life, and the pain are minute during initial alignment.It is more comfortable than Damon Q bracket.
