Correlation of carotid atherosclerosis and senile vascular dementia

Abstract：Objective To investigate the correlation of carotid atherosclerosis and senile vascular dementia for providing clini-cal basis for the prevention of senile vascular dementia. Methods 68 patients with senile vascular dementia(the senile vascular dementia group)and 70 health examiners(the control group)were selected. Carotid artery and internal carotid artery diameter, intima - media thickness(IMT),carotid atheromatous plaque and blood lipid level were compared between the two groups. Re-sults Carotid artery and internal carotid artery diameter of vascular dementia group was obviously less than control group,IMT was significantly higher than the control group(P < 0. 05). Atherosclerotic plaques incidence of vascular dementia group was ob-viously higher than that of control group(P < 0. 05). The levels of TG,TC,LDL - C vascular dementia group were obviously higher than that of control group,and the levels of HDL - C were significantly lower than the control group(P < 0. 05). Conclu-sion Carotid artery atherosclerosis and vascular dementia has a certain relevance. Taking positive measures to prevent and treat atherosclerosis is helpful to reduce the incidence of vascular dementia.
