Abstract:Objective To discuss the effect of preoperative serum C-reactive protein( CRP)levels on predicting the prog-nosis of patients with esophageal cancer. Methods Preoperative CRP serum levels were measured in 120 patients with esophage-al carcinoma. The relationship between the CRP serum levels, clinicopathological features and long-term prognosis was evalua-ted. Results The serum CRP levels were significantly associated with TNM stage,T stage and N stage, but not with age,gen-der,histological type and tumor location. All patients were divided into elevated CRP group and normal group according to CRP concentration of 5 mg/L as the boundary point. Univariate analysis showed that histological type, tumor TNM stage,T stage,N stage and serum CRP levels were associated with survival. The 5-year cancer-specifc survival in patients with CRP﹤5 mg/L and≥5 mg/L were 43% and 16% respectively(P﹤0. 05). Multivariate analysis showed that histological type,T stage and CRP were independent prognostic parameters. The hazard ratio( HR)95% CI of elevated CRP group and normal group was 2. 765(1. 713,4. 465). Conclusion The presence of an elevated preoperative C-reactive protein concentration was an inde-pendent predictor of poor cancer-specific survival.
