Abstract:Based on the FY-4A satellite data and its retrieval products, the C-band Doppler radar data of Qiandongnan Prefecture and the reanalysis sounding data from Kaili Station, the characteristics of a hail weather process that happened in Qiandongnan Prefecture,Guizhou Province,on May 10,2021,are analyzed. Moreover, the feature identification of FY-4A satellite data and products in hail weather and the applying methods in hail monitoring and early warning are discussed. The results show that:(1)The hail cloud developed very rapidly this time, and hail fell two hours after the formation of the cloud cluster. Both hail events occurred in the area with temperatures below-20℃at the rear of the low-value center, and the radar echo intensity was greater than 50 dBZ,which has good indicative signifi-cance for the hail falling area.(2)The average cloud optical thickness was stably maintained above 40,with the maximum value exceeding 100.However,the average effective radius of the particles in the cloud did not exceed 25 μm both before and after the hail fall, indicating that the water content in the cloud was extremely abundant.(3)The microphysical structure characteristics of hail clouds indicate that the vertical development of hail clouds was deep, and the effective radius of cloud particles had little change with the decrease of temperature, remaining at 15-30 μm throughout the whole layer. The small-scale supercooled water droplets in the cloud could be lifted near the cloud top by strong updraft, and there was a certain amount of supercooled water at the cloud top of hail clouds.
