Abstract:In order to explore the distribution characteristics of soil carbon and nitrogen in arid and semia-rid areas, contents of soil organic carbon( SOC) ,total nitrogen( N) ,NH4+-N and NO3--N and soil physi-cal characteristics were investigated in three 20 year-old artificial forests ( Platycladus orientalis,Robinia hispida,Quercus variabili) in southern foot of Taihang mountain. The results showed that with the increase of the soil depth, bulk density of soil increased in three artificial forests;soil moisture content and soil capi-llary porosity decreased;contents of SOC,N(total N,NH4+-N and NO3--N) decreased; overall, for the contents of SOC and total N,Robinia hispida artificial forest was the highest,Platycladus orientalis artifi-cial forest was the lowest. The C/N ratio of soil profiles had no significant differences with the value from 6 . 44 to 12 . 00 . SOC content and soil moisture content were all significantly positively related with the contents of total N,NH4+-N and NO3-N ( except Platycladus orientalis artificial forest) in three artificial forests;the soil bulk density was negatively related with the contents of SOC,total N,NH4+-N and NO3--N,but only significantly related with the contents of SOC,NH4+-N and NO3--N in soil of Platycladus orien-talis artificial forest.
