Investigation of the Impact of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competitions on Medical Students'Innovation and Entrepre-neurship Capabilities

Abstract:Objective To investigate the current status of innovation and entrepreneurship competitions in medical colleges and universities and analyze the role of such competitions in developing medical students'innovation and entrepreneurship capabilities.Methods Medical imaging students enrolled at a medical university were selected as the research subjects,self-designed questionnaires were administered,including a general information questionnaire,innovation and entrepre-neurship competency assessment scale and innovation and entrepreneurship competition experience questionnaire.A total of 558 valid questionnaires were collected,and the collected data were analyzed by univariate and multivariate linear regression analysis.Results A total of 20.97%(117/558)of medical students participated in innovation and entrepreneurship competitions were surveyed.Compared with the medical students who did not participate in the innovation and entrepreneurship competitions.The proportion of undergraduates who participate in the innovation and entrepreneurship competitions,students ranking in the top 50%academically,those with club experience and those with entrepreneurial experience were higher(all P<0.05).Among the students who participated in the innovation and entrepreneurship competition,the active participants accounted for 48.72%(57/117);the top three motivations for participating in the competition were to improve personal comprehensive quality,win awards or honor,add grade points and gain the advantages of postgraduate recommendation.Students with competition experience demonstrated significantly higher scores than those without competition experience in innovation and entrepre-neurship capabilities scores,entrepreneurial awareness,knowledge-skill reserves,planning competencies,team-work capabilities,resource integration capacities and psy-chological resilience(all P<0.05).Multivariate linear re-gression analysis revealed that entrepreneurial experience,individual invested effort,inter-team collaboration,specialty-innovation integrated education and project incubation and promotion were identified as independent influencing factors for innovation and entrepreneurship capabilities(R2=0.583).Conclusion Innovation and entrepreneurship competitions can enhance innovation and entrepreneurial capabilities in multiple aspects.Colleges and universities need to focus more on training components related to innovation and entre-preneurship capability development in their competition training programs,while guiding students to engage in practical participation in these kinds of competitions.
