Abstract:Objective To explore the effect of perceived stress on sleep quality and chain mediation of anxiety and depression in recruits. Methods A questionnaire survey was conducted among 3 899 recruits who enlisted in the same batch in March 2024,using the Chinese perceived stress scale(CPSS),Pittsburgh sleep quality index(PSQI)scale,self-rating anxiety scale(SAS)and self-rating depression scale(SDS).Results Among 3 899 recruits,267(6.85%)had sleep problems, recruits from urban areas had higher PSQI scores than those from rural areas(P<0.05).Correlation analysis showed that there was a significant positive correlation between perceived stress, anxiety, depression and sleep quality scores(all P<0.001).Mediation analysis revealed that perceived stress could not only directly affect the sleep quality of recruits(effect value=0.076,SE=0.006,95%CI:0.065-0.088);it could also negatively affect sleep quality through anxiety and depression, the independent mediating effect of anxiety was 0.046(SE=0.006,95%CI:0.035-0.058),the independent mediating effect of depression was 0.020(SE=0.003,95%CI:0.014-0.025),and the serial mediating effect of anxiety and depression was 0.025(SE=0.004,95%CI:0.019-0.032).Conclusion Perceived stress not only directly affects the sleep quality of recruits, but also indirectly affects the sleep quality through anxiety and depression.
