Effects of Underwater Exercise on Joint Function of Early and Middle Stages Knee Osteoarthritis

Abstract:Objective To observe the effects of underwater exercise on function of early and middle stages knee osteoarthritis (KOA) patients,and compare with unarmed exercise.Methods A total of 187 KOA patients who met theirs standards were selected from March 2013 to June 2016.Patients were divided into underwater exercise group (n =93) and unarmed exercise group (n =94) by random number table.Two groups all received acupuncture and moxibustion treatment.The Lequesne knee function scores of two groups were compared before and after the treatment.The patients' conditions were observed at 3 and 6 months after treatment.Results After treatment,the Lequesne knee function scores of two groups were all higher (P<0.05).The therapy effects of underwater exercise group at 3 and 6 months after treatment were better than these of unarmed exercise group (P<0.05).Conclusion The underwater exercise or unarmed exercise combines acupuncture and moxibustion treatment can alleviate the clinical symptoms of KOA effectively,and the underwater exercise treatment is better.
