Effects of Cognitive-behavioral Therapy on Psychological Status and Quality of Life of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Patients

Abstract:Objective To explore the effects of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) on psychological status and quality of life (QOL) of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).Methods A total of 78 COPD patients were randomly divided into intervention group (39 cases) and control group (39 cases).Both groups were provided with general clinical treatment and nursing practice,while CBT was added to the intervention group.The patients were investigated by self-rating depression scale(SDS),self-rating anxiety scale (SAS),Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90) and the short form-36 health survey (SF-36).The scores were evaluated to find out the differences of the two groups concerning their psychological status and life quality after 4 weeks and 8 weeks of intervention.Results ①The SDS and SAS scores of the intervention group dropped along with time,and were obviously lower than those of the control group in the same period (P<0.05).②The SCL-90 score of the intervention group decreased along with time,and was remarkably lower than that of the control group in the same period (P<0.01).Factors scores of somatization,interpersonal relationship,anxiety,depression and fear,etc,were obviously lower than those of the control group in the same period (P< 0.05).③The score of QOL increased with time and was higher than that of the control group in the same period (P< 0.05).Conclusion Cognitive-behavioral therapy can remarkably relieve the depression and anxiety of COPD patients and improve their mental status and quality of life.
