A Qualitative Research on the Training Demand and Experiences of Palliative Care Nurses

Abstract:Objective:To explore the training demand and experiences of new palliative care nurses and to provide references for nursing student education and nurse induction training.Methods:The Specialist nurses in palliative care of nursing training base in a tertiary grade A hospital from October 2023 to February 2024 were selected by the method of target sampling.Semi-structured interviews were carried out content analysis was conducted to analyze the interview data.Results:Among 11 introduced cases of study objectives,five themes were extracted,including inadequate preparation of new palliative care nurses;after receiving palliative care training,the cognition and ability of palliative care nurses to implement quality care were improved,and the nurse-patient relationship was more harmonious;palliative care nurses are willing to be trained in symptom assessment,communication skills and death education;palliative care nurses need to receive training on life attitude and concept of palliative care;palliative care nurses want to be trained through clinical practice,simulation training or case teaching.Conclusion:The preparation of new admission palliative care nurses is insufficient.After receiving the training,the nurses'clinical practice ability were improved with more positive experience and optimized personal view on life.It is necessary to increase the training of knowledge and concept,and the training could be carried out through experiential teaching.
