Exploration on the Application of Povidone Iodine in Dental Unit Waterline and Soaking Time

Abstract：Objective:To observe the effects of applying povidone iodine in the dental unit waterline and soaking times on disinfection efficacy.Methods:A prospective study was conducted on 16 independent water source dental chairs with external water storage tanks that were put into use in the Department of Stomatology at Yellow River Sanmenxia Hospital from January 1,2023 to December 31,2023.According to the disinfection,they were divided into chlorine-containing disinfectant group and povidone iodine group(n=8).The number and qualification rate of planktonic bacteria in treatment water were calculated to compare the disinfection effects of different disinfectants and the disinfection effects of povidone iodine under different soaking times.Results:Before the disinfection on 16 dental chairs,the average floating bacterial counts in the treatment water of high-speed mobile phones,three-way guns,and mouthwash cups were(119.82±20.33)CFU/mL,(141.65±20.49)CFU/mL,and(127.33±20.36)CFU/mL,respective.Before the disinfection,the qualified rates of different treatment water high-speed mobile phones,three-way guns,and mouthwash cups were are 81.25％,87.50％,and 81.25％,respectively.The bacterial count of the povidone iodine group was lower than that of the chlorine containing disinfectant group after disinfection,on the second day after disinfection,and on the third day after disinfection,and the difference was statistically significant(P＜0.05).The qualified rate finished the disinfection,2d after the disinfection,and 3d after the disinfection were higher than the chlorine-containing disinfectant(P＜0.05).In the povidone iodine group,the floating bacterial counts of in the treatment water of high-speed mobile phones,three-way guns,and mouthwash cups after soaked for 10 min were lower than that soaked lower than 5 min and soaked for 30 min,and the difference was statistically significant(P＜0.05).Conclusion:Povidone iodine has a better disinfection effect on the oral chair water system,and soaking for 10 min has a better disinfection effect.
