Abstract:Objective:To investigate the efficacy of ultrasound-mediated intra-salivary gland injection of botulinum toxin type A in the treatment of pathologic salivation in children with cerebral palsy, with a view to providing an evidence-based basis for the treatment of pathologic salivation in cerebral palsy. Methods:Using a prospective study design,40 children with cerebral palsy with pathologic salivation from the Department of Child Neurological Rehabilitation of Luohu Hospital Group Luohu District Maternal and Child Health Hospital and Shenzhen Bao'an District Social Welfare Center were recruited from June 2021 to December 2023 as study subjects, and they were divided into an intervention group(n=19)and a control group(n=21)according to parental wishes. The control group was treated with oral muscle training, and the experimental group was combined with intra-salivary gland injection of botulinum toxin type A on this basis.Salivation frequency and severity assessment scale(DFSS)scores and 1 min salivation volume were compared between the two groups. Results:At different time points after treatment, the DFSS scores of children in the intervention group were lower than those of the control group, and the differences were all statistically significant(t=6.765,8.270,7.638,3.618,P<0.05).At different time points after treatment, the amount of 1 min salivation in the intervention group was lower than that in the control group, and the differences were all statistically significant(t=2.387,3.939,3.636,2.959,P<0.05).After treatment, all the children did not have any adverse reactions such as dry mouth, rash, respiratory infection, facial paralysis, and so on.Conclusion:Combined intra-salivary gland injection of botulinum toxin type A on the basis of oral muscle training is effective in the treatment of pathologic salivation in children with cerebral palsy.
