Study on the mediating effect of career calling between nurses'job esteem and job satisfaction

Abstract:Objective To explore the mediating effect of career calling on the relationship between nurses'job esteem and job satisfac-tion.Methods A general information questionnaire,Job-Esteem Scale for Nurses in Hospital,Occupational Calling Scale,the Nursing Work-place Satisfaction Questionnaire were used to investigate a total of 484 nurses in a tertiary grade A hospital in Zhengzhou.Results The score of nurses'job esteem was(103.53±12.21),the score of career calling was(46.07±7.64),and the score of job satisfaction was(63.68±10.00).Nurses'job esteem,career calling and job satisfaction were positively correlated(r1=0.725,r2=0.741,r3=0.842,all P<0.01).Career calling played a partial mediating effect between nurses'job esteem and job satisfaction,with an effect value of 0.503,accounting for 60.82%of the total effect.Conclusion Nurses'job satisfaction is at a medium level.Career calling is the mediating variable between nurses'job esteem and job satisfaction.It is suggested that nursing managers should focus on the construction of a job esteem atmosphere for nurses and stimulate the intrinsic motivation of nurses to improve nurses'job satisfaction and promote the development of the nursing career.
