A mixed study on family coping of moderate-to-late preterm infants discharged from NICU

Abstract:Objective To explore the coping conditions and experience of family coping of moderate-to-late preterm infants dis-charged from NICU.Methods Using a mixed method-study,a total of 189 mothers of 237 mid-to late-term premature infants who were dis-charged from the NICU and followed up in the neonatal clinic were surveyed using the parental coping ability questionnaire.Additionally,12 of them were selected for qualitative interviews.Results The total coping ability score of parents after premature infants were discharged from hospital was(161.14±25.80),which was at a high level.The interview information was summarized and five themes were obtained:compromi-sing with the reality of premature infant,improving comprehensive caregiving abilities actively,adapting to parental roles and experiencing the parent-child relationship,maintaining internal family functioning,and gaining external support.Conclusion Although parents faced numer-ous problems in taking care of premature infant discharged from NICU,their families have strong positive coping abilities.It is recommended that medical care staff should explore their positive coping experiences and provide psychological support and professional care guidance through neonatal specialist nurse clinics to help maintain a positive family coping.
