Summary of the best evidence for the management of urinary incontinence in the elderly with dementia

Abstract:Objective To summarize the best evidence on urinary incontinence management in older adults with dementia.Methods Na-tional and international databases for best evidence on the management of urinary incontinence in older adults with dementia were systemati-cally searched from the establishment of database to October 17,2024.Two researchers evaluated the quality of the literature,extracted evi-dence and summarized the final best evidence.Results A total of 12 papers were included in the literature,including 4 guidelines,3 expert consensus papers,1 systematic evaluation,1 evidence summary,2 clinical decision-making papers,and 1 recommended practice paper.Thirty-four pieces of best evidence were categoried into 6 areas including assessment of incontinence,management of incontinence,functional exer-cise,incontinence care supplies,environmental modifications,and education and training.Conclusion It is recommended that the best evidence for urinary incontinence management in the elderly with dementia be developed and implemented based on the best evidence and according to clinical context,patient preferences,and patient wishes to provide an evidence-based basis for care in hospitals,homes,or nursing facilities.
