The mediating effect of job burnout between work-family conflict and work engagement among medical staff

Abstract:Objective To explore the mediating effect of job burnout between work-family conflict and work engagement in medical staff.Methods From July to November 2022,a total of 650 clinical medical staff from five Grade-III Class A general hospitals in Zhejiang Province were selected as subjects by multi-stage sampling design.General information questionnaires,Work-Family Conflict Scales(WF-CS),Maslach Burnout Inventory(MBI)and Utrecht Work Engagement Scale-9(UWES-9)were used.Results The scores of work-family conflict was 29.00(21.00,35.00),job burnout was 64.00(45.00,84.00)and work engagement was 28.00(20.00,35.00).There was a posi-tive correlation between work-family conflict and job burnout(r=0.420,P<0.01),and a negative correlation between work engagement and work-family conflict and job burnout(r1=-0.320,r2=-0.351,P<0.01).The mediating effect of job burnout on work-family conflict and work engagement was-0.142,accounting for 33.02%of total effect.Conclusion Work engagement of medical staff needs to be improved.Job burnout plays a part of mediating effect between work-family conflict and work engagement.The negative impact of work-family conflict on work engagement can be reduced by reducing the job burnout of medical staff,and the overall medical quality can be improved.
