The mediating effect of health literacy on self-efficacy and self-advocacy among young and middle-aged breast cancer pa-tients

Abstract:Objective To explore the mediating effect of health literacy on self-efficacy and self-advocacy among young and middle-aged patients with breast cancer.Methods A total of 227 patients admitted to the breast surgery department of 3 comprehensive tertiary class A hospitals in Xi'an from June to November 2023 were selected by convenience sampling method.General information questionnaire,General Self-Efficacy Scale,Health Literacy Management Scale and Female Self-Advocacy in Cancer Survivorship were used to investigate the pa-tients.Results The score on young and middle-aged breast cancer patients of self-efficacy was(23.78±5.39),score of health literacy was(95.73±11.49)and score of self-advocacy was(79.42±7.14).There was a pairwise positive correlation among self-efficacy,health literacy and self-advocacy in young and middle-aged breast cancer patients(r1=0.356,r2=0.275,r3=0.394,all P<0.01).Health literacy played a partial mediating effect between self-efficacy and self-advocacy in young and middle-aged breast cancer patients,accounted for 44.00%of the total effect.Conclusion The self-advocacy of middle-aged and young breast cancer patients is at an above the middle level,and health literacy plays an mediating effect between their self-efficacy and self-advocacy.Therefore,enhancing self-efficacy and improving health liter-acy level are effective measures to improve the level of self-advocacy of middle-aged and young breast cancer patients.
