Abstract:Objective To explore the views and suggestions of senior nurses on continuing professional development and delayed retire-ment from the perspective of nurses who have worked for more than 30 years. Methods A total of 22 nurses with more than 30 years of nursing experience were interviewed by face to face semi-structured interview, and the data were analyzed by thematic analysis method. Results Four themes were refined:multiple necessity of flexible delayed retirement, experience of continuing professional development, the multi-dimen-sional challenges of continuous professional development, expectations of flexible delay in retirement. Conclusion Whether self-worth can be realized is a key factor affecting the career cycle of senior nurses.Senior nurses have concerns about delaying retirement due to the pressure of interpersonal relationships and insufficient organizational support. In order to support the continuous career development of senior nurses,it is suggested that hospital managers and policy makers should fully affirm and give full play to the professional value of senior nurses, introduce a flexible delayed retirement strategy for nurses based on respecting the right to choose their own jobs, and create multi-channel employment opportunities for nurses after retirement.
