Abstract:Objective To investigate the effect of non-pharmacological interventions on reducing pain caused by radial arterial blood sampling in newborns. Methods A total of 114 newborns were divided into three groups with routine nested nursing care by the time series classification, including oral glucose group(n = 37),oral glucose with pacifier group(n = 39),and oral glucose with white noise group(n=38),and received oral glucose solution, oral glucose solution combined pacifier soothing, oral glucose solution combined with listening to the white noise, respectively, during radial arterial blood sampling. The pain level was assessed using the pain assessment tool.Pre-,intra-and post-puncture heart rate, oxygen saturation, pain score, and crying time were measured. Results The oral glucose group had statistically high-er average pain score and longer crying time than the other two groups(P<0.05).The oral glucose with white noise group had statistically low-er average pain score and shorter crying time than oral glucose with pacifier group(P<0.05).Three groups showed statistically significant differences in intra-and post-puncture heart rate and blood oxygen saturation changes(P<0.05).Conclusion The implementation of com-bined non-pharmacological interventions during radial arterial blood sampling for newborns is helpful to reduce the puncture-related pain by reducing their pain response to the puncture, and shorten the crying time. And the interventional effect of oral glucose solution combined with listening to the white noise is the most significant, which is worth promoting in clinical practice.
