The mediating effect of demoralization between spiritual health and meaningless anxiety in elderly patients with colorectal cancer

Abstract:Objective To understand the current status of spiritual health,demoralization,and meaningless anxiety in elderly colorectal cancer patients,and explore the mediating role of demoralization between spiritual health and meaningless anxiety in elderly colorectal cancer patients.Methods The general data questionnaire,the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Spiritual Well-Being 12,the short Demoralization Scale,and Anxiety Measure of the Existential Meaning-lessness Scale were used to investigate 207 elderly colorectal cancer patients.Results The total score of spiritual health in elderly patients with colorectal cancer was(28.11±7.02),the total score of demorali-zation was 13.00(9.00,18.00),and the total score of meaningless anxiety was(66.40±15.67).The spiritual health of elderly colorectal canc-er patients was negatively correlated with demoralization and meaningless anxiety(P<0.01),while demoralization and meaningless anxiety were positively correlated(P<0.01).Demoralization played a part of intermediary role between spiritual health and meaningless anxiety,the intermediary effect accounted for 56.89% of the total effect,the mediating effect value was-0.982.Conclusion The psychological health lev-el of elderly colorectal cancer patients needs to be improved,and demoralization plays a partial mediating role between spiritual health and meaningless anxiety.Improving spiritual health and reducing demoralization are effective ways to improve the meaningless anxiety status of eld-erly colorectal cancer patients.
