Outcomes study on improving professional identity and humanistic care literacy of nursing students through implementing life education in Taiwan

Abstract:Objective To explore the effect of life education on professional identity and humanistic care literacy of nursing students. Methods Life education interventions were carried out on the nursing students from a 5-year nursing college. Life education interventions were listed as the main shaft of education and were supplemented by the two major education axes of environmental protection,energy conser-vation,and service learning.At the same time,the investigator set up a life and death care course which combines life education and nursing education as characteristic course.The effect of life education was evaluated by self-evaluation questionnaire on nursing graduates before grad-uation each year.Results The total average score of the self-assessment questionnaire for the nursing students was above 3.5 points after 5 years of life education intervention.The items with the highest scores each year were"after 5 years of cultivation I can identify that nursing is a profession" and"I can care and respect the dignity and value of life".The scores of the two items in 7 years have increased year by year. Conclusion The implementation of life education and nursing education in colleges and universities is recognized by the nursing students, especially in increasing their congniton of cultivating the dignity and value of life and improving the humanistic care ability of nursing students,which can provide references for cultivating nursing competence of nursing students in colleges and universities.
