Mediating effect of coping styles on the relationship between self-efficacy and self-management among young patients with type 2 diabetes

Abstract:Objective To explore the mediating effect of coping styles on the relationship between self-efficacy and self-management among young patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM).Methods A total of 227 young patients with T2DM from a 3A-level hospital were investigated with the medical coping modes questionnaire,self-efficacy for diabetes scale and the summary of diabetes self-care activities.Results The score of facing coping style in young patients with T2DM was lower than the norm,the scores of avoidance and resignation were higher than the norm (P<0.01),the average score of self-efficacy was (7.16± 1.73),which was in the middle level,and the average score of self-management was (3.32±1.29),which was in low level.The facing coping style was positively correlated with self-efficacy and self-management (P<0.01).The direct effect coefficient of diabetes self-efficacy for self-management was 0.337,the indirect effect coefficient was 0.046,while the total effect coefficient was 0.383.Conclusion Facing coping style and diabetes self-efficacy have predictive roles on self-management among young patients with T2DM,and facing coping style has a mediating effect between self-efficacy and self-management.
