The relationship between stigma and hope in the relatives of patients with bipolar disorder

Abstract:Objective To investigate the characteristic of stigma and hope of the patients with bipolar disorder (BD) and the relationship between them.Methods A total of 95 in-patients with BD were assessed by Link's Perceived Devaluation-Subscale and the Herth Hope Scale.Results The denial-discrimination perception score in the relatives of patients with bipolar disorder was (2.57±0.27),compared with the mean of the scale (P<0.01).Bipolar disorder patients' families hope level score was (34.83±5.72),which was negatively correlated with belittled feeling of denial-discrimination,positive attitude towards the reality and future,taking positive action,keeping close relationship with others and hope.Conclusion There was a higher level of perceived devaluation and hope in relatives of in-patients with BD.Stigma was the influencing factor for hope.Nursing staff should pay more attention to the stigma and the level of hope,which would help patients' recovery.
